Table Mountain Star Party 2002 Speakers:

Dobson03 55k.jpg (56166 bytes)

John Dobson    - As always Mr. Dobson had a vast array of topics to talk about during his stay with us on Table Mountain this year.  Some of his insights he shared included the Big Bang, Cosmic Expansion, Dark Matter, and "New Hydrogen".  Of course he didn't limit himself to our scheduled talks, either.  Every time he walk the telescope field he would have a crowd around him eager to listen to any advice he may come forth with.  For further information about John Dobson and his writings please visit http://quanta-gaia.org/dobson

Craig Zerbe - Video Imaging - Craig acquired his first telescope 3 1/2 years ago and has quickly become an expert in the video imaging field.  He spoke to us about his successes and his mistakes, the equipment he uses, and techniques that he employs while capturing images with video cameras.  For more information about Craig and his video imaging practices please visit http://www.astroimaging.com

Bruce Weertman - International Dark-Sky Association - Bruce is a member of the International Dark-Sky Association and the Chairman of Dark Skies Northwest.  His presentation included the growing concerns of increased light pollution and the wasted energy that is producing unutilized light.  He also provided resources for individuals and pointed out avenues that they can take to address their light pollution concerns.  You can find more information about Bruce, Dark Skies Northwest, and The International Dark-Sky Association at http://www.weertman.com/bruce/

Joe Rottmann - Astronomy for Beginners (How to find stuff) - Joe is a member of the Rose City Astronomers and an avid amateur astronomer.  He provided three nights of basic astronomy classes where he taught budding astronomers the “star hopping” technique so they can, as Joe would say, "find stuff."

Paul MacAree - CCD Imaging - Paul is a member of the local Squak Mountain Telescope Gang and has recently taken up CCD imaging.  He presented us with his experiences as a beginning CCD imager, which included his lists of "equipment I wished I had" and "equipment I didn’t really need."

Peter Ceravolo - Desktop Universe - Peter is the president of Main Sequence Software.  He introduced us to a new software package titled "Desktop Universe."  This software is a full-color photographic star atlas combined with a powerful planetarium program.  For more information on this software title and Main Sequence Software you can visit http://www.main-sequence.com/

Donna Hensley - Bats! - Donna is a biologist with 15 years experience on bats.  Her presentation helped us take the mystery out of these flying creatures that astronomers share the night sky with.  You can learn more about her and her work with bats at http://www.geology.ewu.edu/bats/donna.htm

Richard Thompson - Harnessing the Sun's energy - "Solar Richard" taught us anything and everything that we wanted to know about the sun and how we can harness it's energy to power our homes and return surplus energy back to the "grid".

Ed Garrett - Windmill power generation project - Ed is a local Ellensburg property owner that informed us of the wind-turbine power generation project that is in the developmental stages at the base of Table Mountain.

John Benham - Astrophysics for the Amateur Astronomer - John brought the complex topic of astrophysics to an eager group of amateur astronomers with a wonderful slide show presentation covering the different stages of advancement in this field throughout human civilization.  He also included an excellent table sized model that demonstrated the effects of warped space.

Frank Gilliland - What I Did Last Summer: The PCT - Frank is a Table Mountain board member that was not able to attend the 2001 TMSP due to his desire to walk the Valles Marineris.  Failing to find transportation to Mars, he decided to hike an equal distance on Earth.  His presentation chronicled his 2700 mile journey on the Pacific Crest Trail. http://home.earthlink.net/~frankbarb/

In the twelve years I have been coming to Table Mountain, it was one of the strangest with the coming and going of the crowd.  Some came early in the week and left by Thursday or Friday.  Just as you thought we were going to run out of parking a group would leave.  It was hard to keep track of where you were full and where the spaces were.

The weather was hot during the day and fair to good viewing most nights.  There were moisture layers moving in and out during the early evenings but good early morning viewing most nights.  There was some good sightings of the International Space Station along with many Iridium flares.  I miss the two great nights of Tuesday and Sunday.  Some said that Tuesday was one of the best nights ever.  I have experienced a few of these type nights and they are truly unbelievable.

Everyone had a great variety of vendors to choose from.  This year the vendors came from everywhere.  There were vendors from New York, Canada, Kansas, Arkansas, California, and New Mexico, as well as the Northwest vendors.  From eyepieces to jewelry, weather equipment to espresso. All in all there were sixteen vendors in total, one of the largest showings ever.

This really helped increase our door prizes.  With the vendor donations we gave away over $11,000.00 in prizes.  From t-shirts and hats to two Dobsonian scopes hand signed by the John Dobson himself.  Many people left Table Mountain very happy.   Thanks to Anacortes Telescope and Wild bird and Meade Telescope one person left with a LX-200 GPS with a full package of accessories.

This year's event seemed to be well accepted by all. If I were asked to rate this year's event, I would give it a 7 1/2 to 8.  If the weather had been just a little better, we would have a perfect 10.

Student Program Report

Student Program 2002 was very successful. With the help from Girl Scout Troop 1865, and several others, our programs were well attended and enjoyed by all.

This year we added a few new components. First, we added a geological and botanical component. John Benham was great talking about the geological formations in the surrounding area. We purchased 5 G Picks and 20 safety glasses. The kids loved banging rocks to find cristobalite, quartz and geodes. Our group didn't find any geodes, but a lady found several specimens of geodes near the campsite. Next year I'd like to buy 5 more G picks and glasses. Viva Worthington, USFS botanist joined the group to be a walk along guide.

On Thursday, science teacher Alison Morgan provided a course on spectography. Her hands on demonstration was really awesome. Parents found the tent too hot and left, as did several of the students. We definitely need a better tent for our programs.

We made the stomp rockets an official part of the program. On Saturday, we had a contest to see whose rocket could be shot the furthest. Age groups were 7 and under, 8 and 9, 10 and 11, 12 and 13, and 14 and over. Next year, I will break down the contestants in groups of 3 so that each contestant will get a ribbon.

We had a few other new programs: Leave No Trace, 10 Survival Skills for Kids. We ran out of time for Map Orientation and Build your own LED lights. But, we can plan for them next year.

We also had movie night on Saturday night. Kids and parents loved the Cosmic Voyage presentation and Forbidden Planet. Next year will continue with movie night.

Constellation mobiles, planispheres and astro bingo were all fun and well attended.
