1999

1999 History
Our 1999 Speakers were:
- Joe Boyce - "Mars
Exploration, Past, Present and Future". Joe is a Planetary
Geologist with the Research Program Management Division, Office of Space Science, NASA.
He is a Mars Program Scientist and Discipline Scientist for the: Origins of Solar
Systems Program, Cosmochemistry Program, Mars Data Analysis Program, Lunar Data Analysis
Program and others. Joe's involvement with planetary research will offer a
wealth of information to our event.
- Jack Newton - "The Latest in CCD Imaging". Jack is a world
renown Astrophotograher, CCD Imager, and author. He will have some great new
images taken from Chiefland, Florida. His many informative books have been a
backbone for the amateur astrophotograher. He is a long time friend of Table
Mountain, and we look forward to seeing him again. If we are very good, Alice will give us
one of her now famous presentations on the trials of following an astronomer from coast to
coast.
- Jack Horne - "A School Partnership in Astronomy".
Jack is the Assistant Science Coordinator for
Washington State ESD-9, and past Professor of Astronomy at Washington State
University. He and Julie Lutz ( past Chair of the National Science Foundation)
have developed a program that prepares teachers to teach astronomy in the classroom.
In addition to his talk, Jack's team of 10 primary grade teachers will be coming to TMSP
this year to help us with our Student Astronomer program. Activities will include
the building of Star Clocks, Constellation Cards, Star Frames, Star Tours and more.
- Dr. Julie Lutz - "The Lives of Stars" and "Astronomy in China".
Julie is the head of
the Astronomy department at WSU. Dr. Lutz is an experience
research astronomer and a long time supporter of amateur astronomy. She was
instrumental in helping us develop the teaching portion of our student program. We
welcome her back to TMSP.
- Jeff Medkeff - "Heat and Telescopes". Jeff is Assistant
Coordinator for the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers (ALPO). His
presentation concerns telescopes from the perspective of thermal effects - cool down,
ambient temperature, tube currents, etc. This talk is ATM oriented but is useful to
the commercial scope user as well. Jeff will also lead a "Solar Workshop" during the day bringing us added
information and daytime viewing. Jeff has offered to do a "Sketching Workshop" if there is interest. The process
of sketching as we observe can greatly enhance our viewing ability as well as adding a
unique dimension to our time spent with the stars.
- Gordon Kirkland- "An Astronomy Tag-Along". Gordon is a
Humorist, Author and a Sky & Telescope Contributor. This talk will be aimed
at the spouse and/or family of the astronomer.
